Major Valentine Strange, a bold soldier of fortune and former officer in the Emperor of Alba’s 21st Regiment of Benhali Lancers, is hired by the enigmatic Brahman Ehimay Warrick to recover a legendary diadem, said to be hidden in a long-forgotten monastery deep within the treacherous, snow-swept mountains of Hidush.

To ensure Strange's success in this dangerous quest, which holds the key to Hidush’s volatile future, the Holy Orders appoint Master Aleister Grimshaw, a young and powerful witch with a dark history of his own—both magical and political—as his reluctant companion.

As Strange and Grimshaw journey through the mist-cloaked foothills toward the lost city of Nagara, they quickly discover that not all enemies wear flesh—dark, ancient forces conspire to prevent them from ever reaching their goal.
